WHO'D HAVE THOUGHT ...

Who'd have thought ... and wait, there's even more! Over the past 150 years, tens of thousands of objects have found their way into our collections, and their number is growing all the time. In this exhibition, we take a closer look at around 50 of them. Many will be on display for the very first time, as most are usually kept in storage. Together, they will take you on a stroll through more than 1000 years of town history – from Erlangen's first documented mention to the coronavirus pandemic – and will add many new aspects to the permanent exhibition.

Museum objects tend to come alive when you ask them questions – some of which are virtually imposing themselves: How did the unicorn get into 'Unicorn Street'? What do the Prussians have to do with the Franconians?

Other objects maintain an aura of mystery: What impact did an unadorned wooden stick have on everyday life in Erlangen?

Some of this 'stuff' tells stories about things you may always have wanted to know about Erlangen, but never dared ask: Why is the Altstadt (Old Town) newer than the Neustadt (New Town)? And from where to where did the 'Sea Cow' run?

Whether large or small, magnificent or inconspicuous – there's one thing all the 'stuff' in this exhibition has in common: It sheds light on curious, questionable, and interesting facts about Erlangen.

Meanwhile it has been our goal to produce this exhibition in a particularly sustainable fashion: We managed to build it to ca. 80% from materials salvaged from other exhibitions.
