The Mesolithic

The Mesolithic

Mesolithic (8,000 – 5,000 BCE)

The climatic warming following the end of the last ice age (around 8,000 BCE) led to dense forest cover, which restricted the mobility of its human inhabitants.

Characteristic for Mesolithic hunters are the small flint points (microliths) they used as arrowheads. These display a low sheen that can be attributed to the stone having been heated (tempering) to make it easier to work.

The large number of archaeological sites from this period proves that our region was used intensively. Their discovery is the result of years of systematic exploration.

One rare find is a pebble engraved with a decorative pattern typical of the Mesolithic period.
