Anthropology and Archaeology

As bone structure differs in men and women, and as the skeleton is subject to age-specific changes, conclusions regarding age and gender can be derived from human remains. Diseases that leave traces on bones, and even kinship, can be detected.

Such anthropological analyses sometimes return interesting results. The tomb shown here contained, apart from bronze and ceramic grave goods, the cremated remains of an adult and a child. Tests revealed that the adult was a woman between 40 and 50 years of age. As arrowheads are absent from women's burials, the arrowhead contained in the grave – the only weapon found in this necropolis – must have been a grave good associated with the child. A bangle, bent to reduce its size, also belonged to the child, while no bronze objects can be attributed to the woman.
