WHO'D HAVE THOUGHT ...

A Crash Course in Erlangen's History

May 18, 2025 – January 6, 2026

Over the past 150 years, tens of thousands of objects have found their way into the Erlangen City Museum's collection, and their number is growing all the time. In the exhibition WHO'D HAVE THOUGHT, we take a closer look at around 50 of them. Whether large or small, magnificent or inconspicuous – together, they will take you on a stroll through more than 1000 years of town history – from Erlangen's first documented mention to the coronavirus pandemic. A crash course in all things Erlangen!

The exhibition tells the story of how two Erlangen students ‘invented’ Franconian Switzerland and why the reputation of Erlangen beer reached as far as the United States. Toy figures from the Nazi era illustrate how even children were indoctrinated in the ways of the regime. A parking meter is representative of the change in Erlangen's transport policy, a protest banner from Erlangen's ‘climate camp’ for current debates on environmentalism.

Whether large or small, magnificent or inconspicuous – there's one thing all the 'stuff' in this exhibition has in common: It sheds light on curious, questionable, and interesting facts about Erlangen.
