Neolithic Culture in the Erlangen Region

Neolithic Culture

Neolithic (5,200 – 2,200 BCE)

The first farmers' settlements (of the 'linear pottery' period) can be found north of Erlangen, on the fertile soils of the Regnitz river valley near Forchheim. Artefacts from the same period found in the uplands may be connected to the procurement of flint.

Numerous stone tools (axes and arrowheads) confirm the use of the forests for pasture and hunting. Ceramics as evidence of permanent settlements appear in the immediate surroundings of Erlangen only during the latter part of the Neolithic.

Discoveries dating from the end of the Neolithic (linear pottery, bell beakers) possibly originate from destroyed grave sites.
