The Dormitz Axe

The Dormitz Axe

Late Bronze Age (around 1,300 BCE)

Bronze, a material that gave its name to an entire archaeological period (2,200 – 750 BCE), consists of copper and tin – two materials not found in our region. They had to be imported. The main transport routes were the rivers.

Numerous archaeological sites (settlements and graves) testify to our region having been densely settled. Along the network of travel routes, the peaks of prominent mountains were selected for settlements, especially the Ehrenbürg ('Walberla') near Forchheim.

Apart from the bronze objects that ended up in the ground as grave goods, the importance of bronze is evident in the numerous objects placed in the ground and in waterways as votive gifts.

An axe found in Dormitz can be considered such a votive gift (deposit find).
