The Prehistoric Collection

The Stadtmuseum (City Museum) Erlangen's prehistoric collection is closely linked to individual researchers and, in particular, to the activities of the Heimatverein Erlangen ('Erlangen Heritage Society'). One of its first exhibits was a model of the 'Kosbach Altar' excavated in 1913 by Rudolf Herold (1879–1917). Apart from single artefacts picked up off the ground – called 'surface finds' – pieces from the excavations and surface surveys made by Ernst Pfister (1894–1929) in the grave fields at Bubenreuth, Dormitz, and Büchenbach entered the collection. From 1928 to 1940, Hermann Hornung (1885–1969) carried out excavations in three Urnfield culture necropoleis and a Hallstatt culture burial mound. These finds largely completed the development of the prehistoric collection. To date, hardly any further research has been carried out regarding the Region's prehistory.
