Passementerie

Ornamental tapes from the estate of the Falkeisen family of passementiers
Erlangen, 19th century

Among the French religious refugees who had settled in Erlangen since 1686 were also a very few passementiers, whose work consisted of making tape, trim, braid, cord, and tassels. By 1750, this craft was already practiced almost entirely by Germans, and remained of minor importance in Erlangen's economy. It is worth mentioning mainly because it points to the diversity of Huguenot influences and projects.

Evidently, some of these industries remained unsuccessful, others merely existed for a short time or remained the pursuit of a single operator. The latter included, for example, maitre arquebusier Charles Frornment's art of gunsmithing, the scale makers' craft of the balancier, and the business of money changer Isaac Galot.
