Coral in Kriegenbrunn

Coral in Kriegenbrunn

Late Hallstatt culture (around 500 BCE)

In the burial mound at Kriegenbrunn, several fibulae featuring coral inlay were discovered – the coral being largely destroyed, however, during chemical testing in 1930.

Coral is found in the Mediterranean. From Pliny (died 79 CE) we know that coral was first used as a gemstone by the Celts living north of the Alps. Especially valued were those from Marseille (Iles d'Hyères) and from near Lipari.

In the Mediterranean region, coral was used only by the Golasecca culture in northern Italy. We may therefore assume that our Kriegenbrunn coral originates in the reefs off the west coast of Italy and reached the Golasecca culture via Etruria. From there they continued their journey over the Alpine mountain passes. These gemstones then finally arrived here via the upper Danube.
